U2 tour ’pops’ into Foxboro on July 1By DEAN JOHNSON
U2 is coming to Foxboro Stadium on July 1 to finish the initial leg of its "PopMart" tour, which begins April 25 in Las Vegas.
The Irish supergroup announced the details of the tour at a press conference yesterdayin a New York City Kmart store.
"Ash Wednesday and Kmart," Bono joked to a roomful of journalists and an international satellite audience, "that just wraps us up." Bono, in wraparound sunglasses and leather jacket, worked the room like a politician, shaking hands as he entered and movingDonahue-like into the audience during the Q-and-A session.
The quartet also played the crisp riff rocker "Holy Joe" that is the B-side to the band’s newsingle, "Discotheque." U2’s 11th album, "Pop," is due in stores March 4.
The "PopMart" tour will play 62 cities in 20 countries through December and continue into another 20 countries next year. Multiple Foxboro dates are a possibility, according toDon Law Company spokesman Dave Marsden.
The extravagant stage show will boast the world’s largest TV screen (150 by 50 feet), a100-foot golden arch, a 35-foot high mirrorball, and a 12-foot wide stuffed olive on a10-story toothpick.
"We believe in trash," said guitarist Edge. "We believe in kitsch, and that’s what we’re up to at the moment."
