(From an interview with Ed Roland of Collective Soul)
Q : So rock is dead, in other words ? ED : Well, no, it’s not that. They always want to say there’s a problem with rock and roll, rock is dead and that crap. The problem is you have to give these artists time to develop. If you don’t have a hit now, you’re not going to be around. If you put that kind of pressure on a young band, that they’ve got to write a hit record, then they’re not being honest with themselves. You’ve got to let them screw up and be true and be honest about their music. Imagine U2 being a new band today ; they would never have made it after October, because it was a failure. We would never have heard War. And War didn’t do as great as I’m sure they wanted it to, so we’d have never heard The Joshua Tree. I feel that there’s some bands out there that can still offer us things that aren’t given a chance.
