A French website, Telerama, currently has an interview with Wim Wendersin which he discusses The Million Dollar Hotel and his relationship withU2, among other things.
An interpretive translation follows :
"Recently I was in New York with Bono to show him the first edit of theMillion Dollar Hotel, a project that we’ve been working on together (withMel Gibson). Six years have passed since we began working on the project. The story idea is originally Bono’s. It was supposed to be a sciencefiction film, but because of an insufficient budget, we placed the story inthe present day. [It] doesn’t matter, it’s a love story...I met Bono andThe Edge, the guitarist, in Berlin when they were recording their albumAchtung Baby. Back then, they sought me out [in Berlin]. They wanted meto direct a video for Night and Day, a remake of Cole Porter’s, which Idid...in my apartment. Bono and The Edge are very cultured men who neverbore me. Bono is interested in futuristic ideas [that is, he is avisionary], which is unusual to see from people who are in the musicbusiness. It is exactly because we shared similiar ideas [about thefuture] that he and his group participated in Until the End of the World, afilm that was set in the year 2000."
