U2 Can Erase Third World Debt

On Sunday Bono brought his Drop the Debt campaign to Cologne, Germany, where the G8 nations were having their economic summit and joined a humanchain of demonstrators surrounding the city. U2 guitarist the Edge, Radiohead’sThom Yorke and Live Aid mastermind/"I Don’t Like Mondays" songwriter BobGeldof were also there. A petition with over a million signatures from around theworld was given to G8 representatives, urging the wealthiest nations to tear upThird World IOUs. G8 agreed to write off $70 billion, but the singer wants more."Our goal is to encourage these politicians to go all the way, not some of theway," Bono said. "It’s an Everest, if you like, but there’s no honor in climbinghalfway up, you have to get to the top." He added, "If they give in to our demands, there’s a chance that 1999 could be remembered not for the destruction of[Kosovo] but for the rebuilding of 52 of the poorest countries in the world. It’s theonly way to end 1999."
