Waxing lyrical for online auction

The Prodigy’s Firestarter is written on an electric heater By Internet Correspondent Chris Nuttall

An umbrella with the lyrics of Here Comes The Rain Again, a two-piece suit inscribed with the words to ABC’s Poison Arrow and a purple lace bustier with the lyrics of Touch Me by Samantha Fox are being sold in the biggest ever auction of music memorabilia with bids allowed over the Internet.

More than 150,000 was raised for charity in a sale of 62 lots at the Hits Under The Hammer auction held in London on Monday night. A further 136 lots are available for online bids until 29 March.

The sale of lyrics at the Sound Republic club was attended by pop stars including Baby Spice, Emma Bunton, members of Depeche Mode and Suggs from Madness. The words to the group’s hit Our House, written on a full-sized door were sold for 3,100 to Baby Spice.

Top prices were also paid for :

Unpublished lyrics by Jimi Hendrix written on airline notepaper in 1969 - 12,500. Original lyrics to Faith by George Michael, with annotations - 10,000 The original lyrics to Three Lions by Skinner, Baddiel and The Lightning Seeds and signed by the 1998 England World Cup squad - 8,000. Another Brick in the Wall lyrics by Pink Floyd, with a piece of the Berlin Wall - 6,000 Lyrics written by Madonna for Little Star - 6,000 Lyrics to Sweetest Thing by U2’s Bono sold for 5,800. Goodbye written by Mel C and signed by all the Spice Girls - 5,600.

One of the few items not to reach its expected price was the original lyrics to Things Can Only Get Better by D:REAM - the anthem of the Labour Party’s 1997 election campaign. They were signed by the Prime Minister and the Cabinet but fetched 4,200 compared to an expected 5,000-7,000.

Among the more unusual lots were the lyrics to Chris De Burgh’s Lady In Red written on a red dress, Right Said Fred’s I’m Too Sexy For My Shirt on a pink La Rocka shirt and The Prodigy’s Firestarter written on an electric heater.

The charities benefiting were Norwood Ravenswood, which helps disadvantaged children, and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy for children and adults.
