Bono’s ’Live Aid’ gets underway

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, hasseemingly responded to the Brit Awards’ call for areduction in the ’Third World Debt’, fronted by Jubilee2000, by announcing a new target to reduce the debt byaround 230 million by the end of the year 2000,doubling the relief previously expected.

Last Tuesday, at the Brit Awards ceremony in London,U2’s Bono, accompanied by ailing boxer Muhammed Ali,appealed to all politicians to reduce crippling debtswhich are preventing Third World countries from gettingon their feet.

In a letter to The Guardian newspaper, Bono wrote thathe has received overwhelming support for a planned, Live Aid style, concert in the German city of Cologne on 19th June from many artists, including Pavarotti, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, REM, Beastie Boys,Michael Jackson, Bob Geldof and Lauryn Hill, who are all prepared toput their weight behind the Jubilee 2000 campaign, which aims topersuade Western Banks to write off the massive debts (around 200billion) owed by struggling Third World countries. Jubilee 2000 is acoalition of various charities, which includes Christian Aid and ComicRelief.

However, not all music stars feel that musicians should involvethemselves in such matters. Rather surprisingly, Blur’s Damon Albarn, although conceding that their intentions are well meaning, feels that -"Musicians, artists should have nothing to do with anything like that.Their power should be in their music, their words and their images."Damon also commented that the idea of thousands of "tanked up" musicfans toasting this kind of sentiment is "hypocritical" and "profoundlyWestern." OK Damon, got any better ideas ?
