Rushdie on Cinematic ’Ground’
For the first time, one of British author Salman Rushdie’s books may be coming to the bigscreen. Paris-based producer-distributor Gemini has acquired rights to his latest novel, "TheGround Beneath Her Feet," a study of a love affair between two Indian rock stars. Raoul Ruiz willdirect the English-language film, and Gemini president Paolo Branco will executive produce. The project is still in development, and no cast has been attached. Branco and Ruiz’s work on a previous literary adaptation — "Time Regained," based on the Marcel Proust epic work that for decades was thought unfilmable — caught Rushdie’s eye after the film screened in competition at Cannes last year. "(Rushdie) liked what Raoul Ruiz did with Proust and got in touch," Gemini head of production Mariella Duigou said. With a budget of about $15 million, "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" is a bigger-than-usual project for Gemini, which may mean bringing in a co-producer. Rushdie’s novel "The Satanic Verses" resulted in a death sentence in 1989 by the late Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini. The so-called fatwa still theoretically hangs over Rushdie.
