U2 HEAD THE STAR LINE-UP AT AWARDS : ROCK ONPaul Martin
A FABULOUS line-up of superstars is being booked to appear at next month’s Irish Rock Awards bash in Belfast.
Organisers wanted to keep the line-up secret.
But I can reveal that U2, Ash, Sinead O’Connor and Ronan from Boyzone will head a star-studded cast at the BBC event.
The Awards show, which will be held at the BBC’s Blackstaff studios in Belfast on April 9 and 10, is amassive coup for the BBC in Northern Ireland. They have secured the rights to stage what will probably be the biggest showbiz gathering in Ulster’s history.
I was first with the news of Michael Jackson, Spice Girls, Blur and Boyzone concerts in Ireland. Now Rock On is first on the scene with details of the year’s hottest event.
Top acts including Radiohead, Enya, David Holmes, The Corrs, Shane McGowan, Van Morrison and theDivine Comedy are also in the frame to perform at the Awards.
Boyzone’s Ronan Keating may even do a solo number on the show, and Sinead O’Connor will definitelyplay live. Negotiations to bring U2 and Sinead made progress late last week, and Radio 1 are nowpreparing to broadcast the show live on the Thursday and Friday.
International television and radio stations will also broadcast Ireland’s answer to the Brit Awards.
"It’s a mammoth line-up, and the fact that U2 are going to be playing speaks volumes for the music scene here," said my spy.
"And the appearance of Sinead O’Connor is a massive coup. The BBC have pulled out all the stops thisyear."
Both U2 and Sinead are renowned for snubbing top awards ceremonies.
But my revelation that they are Belfast bound, and will almost definitely pick up a batch of awards, will have fans scrambling for tickets.
When I called Boyzone manager Louis Walsh and confronted him about Ronan’s special appearance hewas stunned.
"How the hell did you find that out, you sly man ?" he asked. "I can’t deny it, Ronan will be there," he said.
The show will be fronted by BBC music man Mike Edgar and the gorgeous Ulrika Jonsson.
And I’ll be making my usual appearance at the after show parties to bring you the hottest backstage gossip.
