BONO PLEAS FOR THIRD WORLD DEBT TO BE CUT

U2 singer BONO accepted a special award from organisers ofthe 1999 BRIT Awards on behalf of the Jubilee 2000 initiative.

The worldwide campaign, which aims to cancel the debt of ThirdWorld countries to Western financial lenders by the year 2000,has been endorsed by the UK music industry.

Bono made an impassioned speech on behalf of the "world’spoor and starving people" before taking the BRIT Award intothe crowd and handing it over to former heavyweight championof the world and international Jubilee 2000 ambassadorMUHAMMAD ALI at his table.

Bono urged the audience to their feet with the words "Showsome respect ! You’re in the presence of royalty !" The crowdresponded with an extended chant of "Ali ! Ali ! Ali !"

He later spoke to BBC Radio 1 about the initiative and urgedlisteners to write to their MPS to cancel the Third World debt.He said for every 1 western governments gave in aid tostruggling nations, those countries had to pay back 9 inloan repayments.
